The University of Arts London Chelsea (also known as Chelsea College of Arts) has a reputation for producing some of today’s leading artists and designers. Their teaching focuses on material-based investigation and creative process. They’re based in Chelsea, in London.
They offer fine art, design and curating courses.
Chelsea College of Arts needed more space, originally to provide canteen and teaching space for their students for three months. The hire period was extended to cover a full academic year and the marquee provided a space that was used in many different ways: canteen, breakout space, teaching and student exhibitions. In addition The College of Arts wanted to maximise the use of the space, this meant that the structure had to be taken down and set up back up all within a weekend in Central London, this was so that the College could make the space available for filming.
We provided a 20m x 15m structure with hard flooring, solid walls and solid windows. Both entrances had ramps to provide wheelchair access. As the structure was being used for a variety of activities from teaching to events, we supplied an R-10 slip resistant vinyl floor to ensure durability throughout the course of the hire.
As the structure was being erected in the courtyard, normal pins could not be used to secure it. Instead, we used concrete blocks to secure the marquee. Whilst we’ve worked in the courtyard space before, this was for a smaller structure, so there were additional health and safety consideration.
With the original hire period going into the winter, a thermostatically controlled warm-air heating solution was provided to keep everyone using the marquee nice and warm, with energy-saving LED lighting ensuring everyone could work at whatever time of day they wanted to. To reduce the burden on the team at the College of Arts, we also managed their fuel needs for the heating. In addition our skilled team carried out monthly checks on the structure
Solid walls (a mixture of glass and solid sides) and doors provided the security needed.
The marquee provided a widely used space, as you can see from the images. Due to the success and use of the structure the hire period, originally just three months, was extended to cover a full teaching year, providing a much used and dynamic space.
